Blood donors club donates to blood bank
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in collaboration with the District Health Management Team (DHMT) has ended a one day mobile voluntary blood donation exercise at the Simbech section in Kenema City with the aim of securing blood from more blood donors in the city. Speaking to his audience during the exercise the Regional Blood Donor Recruitment Officer east attached to the government hospital in the city Musa Kabba said the mobile voluntary blood donation exercise is an initiative to mobilize voluntary blood donors in the community in order to replenish blood at the blood bank at the government hospital to be used during emergency cases. The regional Blood Donor Recruitment Officer further stated that Sierra Leone is ranked at the bottom of the United Nations Human Development Index due to its high maternal and infant mortality rate in the country and he commended the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for launching the free health care policy of Sierra Leone on the 27th April this year. Musa Kabba said the DHMT in collaboration with IRC have established voluntary blood donor clubs in Kenema district to compliment government efforts during the implementation of the free health care policy. He said Sierra Leone cannot succeed in the full implementation of the free health care policy without the support of the voluntary blood donors in the District. He appealed to all to continue to support and donate blood through the voluntary donor clubs in their communities. He commended the DHMT, IRC and the Simbech community for their role in making the Voluntary blood donor campaign a success in the Kenema district and therefore called on the Kenema community and other non governmental organizations operating in the District to emulate the good example set by the IRC and the Simbech community in promoting voluntary blood donations in the country. In his statement the Chairman of the voluntary blood donor clubs in the District Abdulai Bockarie disclosed that IRC is supporting the voluntary mobile blood exercise in Kenema District, after realizing the rate at which patients especially children and pregnant women are demanding blood during emergency cases. Bockarie maintained that they as blood donors are always ready to make available blood at the blood bank in Kenema city to save the lives of others who are badly in need of blood during emergency cases.
