The Ministry of Health and Sanitation office in Kenema has released its last year’s report on births and deaths in the Kenema city covering from 25th January to December 2008.
The report confirmed that a total of 31,584 live births, 121 still births and 502 deaths of all ages were recorded. According to the annual statistical report from the births and deaths division Kenema district in collaboration with the District Health Management Team (DHMT) and local councils last year, the figure presented does not reflect the old country’s picture annual statistic but only for the Kenema district.
The births and deaths division during the period under review under took four major projects implementation under the RRA (Rapid Rural Appraisal) project funded by the two local councils with the Kenema district council taking the lead the release stated.
The report further added that the just concluded RRA project funded by the Kenema District Council (KDC) said the registration of birth and death in two class B chiefdoms Dodo and Malegohun chiefdom in the Kenema district targeting the age group of zero and eight years and the Kenema City Council (KCC) also funded another registration of birth and death activities within the city environs that is conducting tracing training for health staff, traditional rulers and opinion leaders respectively.
The report further commended the public health and information unit of the DHMT for being instrumental in the sensitization drive on birth and death key activities in the district and the monitoring and the evaluation unit of the Kenema District Council for the relentless efforts to see that all RRA projects funded by the council were fully implemented.
There are recommendations sent to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, supportive donor agency, UNICEF child Protection unit which stood firmly to see that children under eighteen (18) years country wide have their births registered. Also the Deputy Director of Education (DDE) east who yielded to their call to instruct all head of educational Institutions for the demand of birth certificate for new admission the released stated.
