Reports from the diamondiferous town of Tongo field in the Lower Bambara chiefdom in the Kenema district states that commercial activities came to a halt on Monday afternoon when supporters of the ruling APC party went berserk.
The whole incident started when two youths commonly called Jakobi and Wahab alleged to be supporters of the opposition SLPP entered Tongo field. The supporters of the ruling APC party who saw them in Tongo field are alleged to have vowed to kill the two youths because they were accused of uttering words against them and their APC party during the past elections.
The APC youths reportedly chased them and the two youths ran into a Police officers house to seek safety. The pursuing youths did not stop, but pounced on the police officer wounding him and vandalizing his property, but the two youths were fortunate to be in police protection.
It was alleged that the youths then attacked the police station to get hold of the two youths and this development gave cause to the police to fire a few shots of live bullets in the air and also fired tear gas canisters to disperse the angry youths who were hosted at the APC office near the police station.
At the time of the attack on the police there was only a small unit of police personnel on the ground, this then resulted in the imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew in the town while reinforcement of police personnel were then dispatched from Kenema to Tongo.
The Paramount Chief of Malegohun Chiefdom in the Kenema district Madam Salay Satta Gendemeh while on the way to her chiefdom from Kenema had to request for police protection in Tongo field before she was able to pass through Tongo field to go to her chiefdom. The police personnel who were escorting her vehicle Mitsubishi ACZ 620 had to fire warning shots in the air as they went through the main streets.
This is the third clash in two months time between supporters of the ruling APC party and the opposition SLPP in Tongo field. Tongo field was the hottest spot during the past local council elections as supporters of the ruling APC party, Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) and the opposition SLPP clashed with each other.
According to the reporter of Radio Nongowa in Kenema city Sedie Yayah alias D.J.Snow who was on the ground and was linked live from Tongo field for situation report he told listeners that there has been a lot of destruction in the township caused by the youths. He stated that when he went to the SLPP party office near the main lorry park the place was closed and there was nobody to talk to but when he visited the APC office opposite the police station he met a group of youths at the office some having potato leaves as protection against the tear gas, – they then claimed to be there to protect their office alleging that the police were sending tear gas at them.
