Biden’s Covid origins lab probe is politically motivated
The US intelligence committee has recently compiled a report on the origins of COVID-19. The two-page summary of the report the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released on Friday 27th August does not rule out either natural exposure or laboratory accident as the origins of SARS-CoV-2, but it claims that China continues to hinder the global investigation, resist sharing information and blame other countries.
Also a statement by the White House purported that China tries to hold back international investigation and rejected calls for transparency. It urges like-minded partners to exert pressure on China.
Well, in my opinion, the United States intelligence community report on COVID-19 origins is not scientifically credible, and Washington’s assertion of lack of transparency on the part of China is only an excuse for politicizing and stigmatizing purpose, as this has been the story the U.S. has been peddling since Donald Trump was in office.
Does it matter where the virus that causes Covid-19 came from? In terms of frontline medicine, perhaps not, patients still need to be treated and the public health crisis managed.
But when it comes to geopolitics, it matters greatly, particularly to the United States. So, the new investigation into the origins of the virus has seen a blame game as the United States is determined to put China down after all they have achieved in the last 70 years.
When President Joe Biden announced he had ordered a further US intelligence investigation into the origins of Covid-19, asking for a report back in 90 days, he revealed the US intelligence community is split between two likely scenarios, human contact with animals or a lab accident, and could not assess whether one was “more likely than the other”.
It is evident that the US doesn’t care about facts or truth at all, neither is it interested in a serious scientific study on the origins. Its only aim is to use the pandemic for stigmatization and political manipulation to shift the blame.
Fort Detrick, a US Army biomedical research laboratory in Maryland has been linked to the emergence of the virus. If the US is bent on insisting that the possibility of a lab-leak cannot be ruled out, it should start with inviting WHO experts to launch a probe into Fort Detrick and the University of North Carolina to find the source of the virus in the principle of fairness and justice.
The Chinese have stressed on multiple occasions that origins tracing of COVID-19 is a complex issue of science. It should and can only be undertaken by scientists around the world through joint research. The US, however, disregards science and facts. It is instead obsessed with political manipulation and origins tracing by the intelligence community. Without providing any evidence, the US has cooked up one story after another to defame and accuse China. The aim is to use origins tracing to shift blame onto China and spread the political virus. The deployment of the intelligence community in origins tracing is in itself a compelling evidence of the politicization of the issue.
Early this year, a WHO-China joint study team of leading international and Chinese experts conducted a 28-day research in China and released a Joint Report containing authoritative, professional and science-based conclusions. This is a good foundation for international cooperation on origins tracing. They have been supporting science-based efforts on origins tracing, and they will continue to stay actively engaged. The Chinese foreign ministry called for the US to follow its example to “act in a positive, science-based and cooperative manner” and invite WHO experts over “for an origin-tracing study.”
The Chinese does not want the incident that happened with Iraq to happen to them when the U.S. Intelligence used a tube of laundry powder to convict Iraq of possessing weapons of mass destruction, or staging the “white helmets” video as evidence for chemical weapon attack in Syria.
Obviously the US side is using its old trick again. Ignoring the report by the WHO and trying to provide their own that they would sell to their allies so that when they meet at G-7 and NATO they would convince their allies that China is the cause of the virus so they will rally round to fight China, economically, financially, through sports etc.
China has done so much on this virus by releasing information, shared the genome sequencing of the virus, and carried out international cooperation to fight the disease, all done at the earliest possible time. China is the first to cooperate with the World Health Organization on global origins-tracing, and it has invited WHO experts to conduct the investigations twice.
China was completely open, transparent and cooperative when the experts were in China. They visited every site on their list, met every individual they asked for, and were provided with all the data they wanted.
The report released by the intelligence community is based on presumption of guilt on the part of China, and it is only for scapegoating China. Such a practice will only disturb and sabotage international cooperation on origins-tracing and on fighting the pandemic, and has been widely opposed by the international community.
