Solomon Baryoh has failed to advance from the first round of heats in the 200 meters yesterday Monday in the Bird’s Nest when he ended in eighth place.
The first heat of the 200 meters featuring one of the discipline’s favorite Shawn Crawford of the United States was too good for the Sierra Leone runner as he was struggling to compete because when the other runners were strolling for qualification, he was pulling in all gears to make it to the next round, but alas, he failed with a woeful time – over 22 seconds.
Solomon Baryoh who is the third athlete to participate in the Olympics has finally joined the other two to be eliminated.
The first was boxer Ibrahim Bangura who was beaten in the qualifying round with the Argentine referee calling the bout off to avoid injuries.
Then last Friday was the turn of Michaela Kargbo in the 100 meters which unsurprisingly ended up in the first round.
Since the inception of Olympics Sierra Leone has never been able to go beyond the quarterfinal stage of any competition. Infact this year’s Olympics has been the worst with just three athletes who even did not qualify to be there.
The games would continue until Sunday when the flames will go out and the Olympic flag handed over to London for 2012.
