One of Sierra Leone’s sprinters, Bangali Keita who is currently residing in Australia has declared interest to represent the country in this year Olympic Games in London.
According to information gathered by Awoko Sports, Bangali Keita while in Banjual, The Gambia, was the fastest runner in the junior category in 2002, and in the same year he was second fastest in the senior category.
He returned home in 2003 and attended the St. Edward’s Secondary School where he also excelled and represented the Sierra Leone in number international competitions. He is presently under going intensive training in his resident Australia in preparation for his qualification for the summer games.
In another development, the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, SLAA has disclosed that it has two athletes; a male and a female, currently undergoing mentoring at the High Performance Athletics Training Centre in Dakar, Senegal to prepare them for International competitions including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championship.
The female athlete, Rebecca Ansumana, a sprinter left for Dakar about a week ago. She gained her recommendation from the ‘B’ Standard Project to join her male colleague, Ibrahim Turay, who gained recommendation from the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship through the NOC in Sierra Leone.
The Secretary General of the Athletics Association, Dauda Sundifu Sowa, the two sprinters are expected to join other professional athletes based abroad to form the core of Sierra Leone’s Olympic representatives.
“I think this training will have a positive effect on the athletes and a big boost for the association to send quality representation to this year’s Olympic Games,” Sundifu Sowa said, and assured that in this year’s Olympics Sierra Leone will surely win medals.
