Auditors storm City Council

The Freetown City Council is reported to have generated billions of Leones and much of it has been expended to improve on social services, within the Freetown municipality.
Amidst allegations of financial impropriety a team of auditors are currently auditing the financial management of council funds.
The auditors are expected to critically look in to monies collected from the public as tax, market dues, trader registration and license fees generated from the business community. Documents released by the Council under the heading cost benefit analysis and market operations of 2008 show that Market dues and Traders Registration generated the sum of seven hundred and twenty three million, three hundred and seventy one thousand and six hundred Leones (Le723,371,600) and expenditures which include collection costs went up to the tune of five hundred and thirty nine million, seventy one thousand and seven hundred and eighty two Leones (Le539,071,782).
Payment of Market staff accounted for two hundred and sixty seven million eight hundred and seven thousand, four hundred and thirty two Leones (Le267,807,432) and printing of tickets two hundred and seventy one million two hundred and sixty four thousand, three hundred and fifty Leones (Le271,264,350) while the bulk of the money was spent on structural rehabilitation to the tune of three hundred and forty six million, one hundred and forty three thousand four hundred and thirty three Leones (Le346,143,433).
Cleaning and other facilities forty seven million five hundred and eighty thousand and fifty Leones (Le 47,580,050) was spent with the total money spent for all activities being nine hundred and thirty two million seven hundred and ninety five thousand and two hundred and sixty five Leones (Le 932,795,265).
Funds were also diverted from other sources to make up for the shortfall to the tune of two hundred and nine thousand four hundred and twenty three thousand six hundred and sixty five Leones (Le209,423,665) and to up keep the smooth running of Council administration.
The auditors will examine financial records and its expenditures to verify if there were any financial malpractices at the Freetown City Council as speculated in many quarters.
Cyril Mattia Public Relation officer of the city council was quick to react to the allegations of misappropriation of funds saying that people are quick to criticize the council despite the numerous efforts put in place to improve on social amenities in Freetown
