Broken glass, stones and wrecked furniture, teargas canisters, littered St Edwards Secondary School, May Park, yesterday where hell was let lose between students and their old time neighbor, the Police at Kingtom Barracks.
The School building was as if an automatic oozy rifle was let lose on it, leaving nothing but a mere wreck structure barely standing.
Senior Teacher, Olufemi Brown narrated that it all started around three o’clock when a Student and a Police Officer in mufti were seen fighting in the School Compound.
He explained that a Teacher by the name of Gibrilla Bangura went to calm down the dispute; and chastised the Police that it is wrong to fight a Student inside his School Compound.
The Police then turned his anger on the Teacher and an argument ensued, Teacher Brown narrated, “Other Police Officers came to the scene and subsequently the Teacher was invited by the Police.”
Brown continued, “when the Teacher arrived at the Police Station he was handcuffed and detained.”
“The Students being aware that their Teacher has been detained went on the rampage and stormed the Station pelting rocks, protesting that the Teacher should be released,” he said.
Subsequently, Brown continued “residents in the Barracks came into the School Compound with machetes and sticks, raining stones on the School Building; breaking the windows, disrupt ongoing classes and injured some of the students who were taking classes.” He averred that the Students retaliated; and as such backup Police Officers were called and they came to the scene and started beating Students mercilessly.
However, Police Officer Abubakarr Paul-Kamara attached at the transport headquarter Kingtom had a different explanation.
According to him some Students were seating inside the Police Field at their usual joint were they smoke cannabis and gamble when they saw a girl passing by.
He narrated that they try to woo the girl and when the girl refused to heed they started making all kind of sarcastic comments.
Paul-Kamara said another Officer who was at the scene advised them to go to School instead of causing trouble. The Students subsequently abused the Police and started beating him.
When another Police Officer went to the scene to assist his colleague, a Teacher came around and mobilized the students to attack us.
Andrew Massaquoi, a Senior Teacher at the School said that efforts were made by the School Authorities to calm the situation but they were manhandled and abused by the Police.
The Police also alleged that their canteen was destroyed by the Students who attacked the barracks with Molotov curtail (bottle bomb).
