Residents of Johnson Lane Lakka Village yesterday stormed the offices of Awoko Newspaper to complain about an alledged Police eviction and looting of properties worth Millions of Leones without prior notice.
According to one of the affected victims Bola George who spoke to this press SHE disclosed that a truck load of police personnel and thugs stormed the area armed with batons teargas and riffles to evict tenants of the Lakka Village.
She added that, the Police damaged properties and carted away with valuable items, “the Police failed to provide a legal document to authenticate the eviction order but they remarked that it is orders from the above” she complained
This Press sent a reporter to the scene to substantiate the claims it was observed that over 100 people were evicted with their properties scattered at random while the aged and the young lay on the bare floor besides their damaged properties crying in agony, frustration and dismay in the hands of the Police.
Abu Williams told this press that, the police harassed and intimated residents of the entire Lakka Village with guns on their head using threatening remarks to deal with any one who ventures on the said land will be severely dealt with.
He also alledged that tenants were not allowed to collect their belongings as thugs had been hired to damage or cart away any valuable item their hands can lay upon, ‘we stood out side and observed keenly as they vandalized our residents” he complained.
Williams also alledged that most of the Police Personnel at the scene removed their badges, ranks and numbers from their various uniforms to avoid proper identification.
Another victim of the eviction was Balu George who had just returned home from the UK expressed frustration and disappointment over the lawlessness of the Police and described them as enemies of the people.
Narrating her ordeal in the hands of the Police, she disclosed that the Police abused and also stole from poor citizens on orders from above describing the action as rebellious and tantamount to discrediting the Government.
She added that, a surveyor was on the way to Lakka Village when they were informed that, the Police had gone to the village to evict residents.
As of late last night most of the residents had no where to go as they were lying out in the open air half naked while the aged and little children cringed on their bits and possessions in the open.
They also told this press that the Land at Lakka Village was leased to St Michaels for a period of 25 years but prior to their departure they relocated residents to Johnson Lane where they had occupied with valid documents.
Most of the residents were surprised and shocked with the Police action yesterday because the matter is presently in the High Court. A Police personnel attached to the Adonkia Station who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that they only received orders from the above to evict residents at the Lakka Village and they performed their duties accordingly.
