In a desperate move to catch up with the All People’s Congress (APC) propaganda radio station, the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has opened FM 94.9 Radio Unity.
The radio operates from the SLPP’s Lightfoot Boston Street headquarters.
The SLPP’s publicity secretary, Victor Reider, yesterday told Awoko from his office that the radio came out of the need to educate and inform their supporters at this time.
Mr Reider said they saw it necessary more so when most of the private radio stations were hooked up with the Independent Radio Networks(IRN),which would not have time to air their party’s views.
He referred to the radio station as “a medium through which the SLPP will continue to disseminate information to our membership and the public in general”.
The Radio Unity, Victor Reider went on, was on test transmission on Monday, but was shut down yesterday for engineers to work on the antennae for wider coverage.
When asked why was it that it was only now the SLPP was operating a radio station when the APC had started theirs long time ago, the SLPP’s publicity secretary said, “that tells the extent to which the SLPP is democratic and tolerant. And before then, we did not see the need to have a radio station but have only seen it now.”
Meanwhile, Victor Reider commended the efforts of the Independent Radio Network (IRN) for letting the public know about the provisional results.
But cautioned that the results they were giving out were only provisional as it was only NEC that would announce the final results.
He said his party had informed their supporters to wait and hear from NEC the final results
