In working towards making the Bumbuna hydro Electricity project a reality, residents within and around the high tension pylon are restless while some were angry after being informed at the Atlantic hall, national stadium past Saturday that they must vacate the area as demolition starts on the 18th, July, 2009.
The information, centered on the demolition of structures which are situated 15 meters left and 15 meters right of the pylon .The news drew receive embarrassing gestures from the affected audience, as they murmured around aimlessly with grim faces.
Addressing a massive gathering of those affected, the chairman of the National Resettlement consultant Mr. Claudius J. Thomas mentioned that the information is not relayed with a deliberate intent to treat residents of these areas with contempt. He said the exercise about to be undertaken appeared as a sole mandate from the engineers and donors of the hydro project. He further stated that the exercise is not going to leave those affected in shambles as processes are ongoing to ensure compensation of property owners. In so doing, every house is going to be valued, and in addition fulfill certain criteria during the monitoring process to enhance transparency and reliability, and general satisfaction of all affected.
Moreover, Mr. Thomas added, his office is going to engage Parliament and the Ministry of Lands to ensure that property owners (land and house owners) are provided lands to reestablish themselves.
The Lead Consultant of the programme Mr. Saa James allayed the fears of affected persons by highlighting the compensation processes which involve the payment of transition and moving allowance of 400 dollars to all categories of persons, evaluation of all affected properties to determine the value of the property hence compensation and provision of food aid i.e. bag of rice and other cooking ingredients for every head of family for six months.
He ended by admonishing that the departure date for all to clear the 30 meters corridor is 18th July, 2009.
