82 Prison officials who were trained under UNAMSIL and were incorporated in the Prison force are crying for their backlog allowance since July 2003.
The aggrieved prison officials said that they have been fighting for their backlog and nothing has come out of it.
They said that they have been paid Le600, 000 but each of them are owed the sum of Le535, 000.
Chief Superintendent Cecilia Ellie, the Pay and Quarter Master for the Prisons Department confirmed that indeed the Department has not paid these 82 prison officials since 2003.
She said that the allowance the department owes these officers is for rice at Le41,000 which has accumulated to that amount over the years.
Cecilia shifted the blame of this non-payment to the Accountant Generals Office; she said that they have been sending letters to that Office urging them to pay these officers.“We are really embarrassed with this situation, the officers are pestering us and sometimes they think that it is our fault” said the Pay master.
She pointed out that even with the letters they also make representations and sometimes take the aggrieved officers to the Accountant General’s Office to push for their payment.
“Even today (October 5), I went to the Accountant General’s Office to get them to pay these staff and many other staffs who had problems with their salary payments.
They give us assurances that they will pay them soon” she said.Cecilia pointedly stated that the assurances they get from the Accountant Generals office is what they in turn give to the aggrieved officers.
“We pity these people, we feel embarrassed but we cannot do anything more than urge the Accountant General to pay or rectify errors in officers salaries, this is the sorry reality” she concluded.
