Upon the ratification of the Sierra Leone Health Service Commission Act of 2011 in the well of Parliament yesterday, the Commission which is supposed to assist the Ministry of Health in the delivery of affordable and improved health care service to the people of Sierra Leone, Health and Sanitation Minister, Zainab Bangura, expressed her total disgust over some health workers’ negligence in treating health related issues with the utmost seriousness it deserves.
According to the Health Ministry, the Health Service Commission will be responsible for hiring professional staff in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and supervising and monitoring the hospital boards across the country, and dealing with all the paraphernalia regarding the promotion of the health sector in Sierra Leone.
The commission will further be responsible for the discipline of staff; assess the Health Ministry with regards to policies and programmes within the health sector and in the various hospitals, and the monitoring of standardization of the services that are going to be provided on a daily basis by the hospital boards.
However, ahead of the formation of this important commission, the Health Minister noted key militating factors to the growth of the Health Ministry. This includes the absence of adequate human resource in terms of number, scales and competencies, adding that there is also an issue of distribution of staff across the country, even with the huge number of health facilities available at present.
The Minister in her remarks, also unearthed some ills in the health providing sector ranging from negligence of some Doctors, Nurses and the general hospital care management about their attitudes in discharging their functions in health related issues.
She narrated a very sad event that took place at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) during which a certain pregnant woman was abandoned to death as a result of negligence and delay to respond to her critical moment. She added that this is not the first case and not in the PCMH alone, but in most other hospitals and clinics around the country.
Consequently, the commission about to be formed has an element of disciplinary actions for those who deliberately indulge into malpractices in clinics and hospitals, as doctors involved in the PCMH malpractice are presently undergoing disciplinary actions.
