As this year’s Inter Secondary School Sports competition approaches its end, the Kids Advocacy Network has called on students to be very peaceful during and after the sport meet.
Speaking to Awoko Sport, the National President of Kids Advocacy Network, Edmond Alim B. Fornah who also doubles as Sierra Leone’s Child Ambassador, noted that pupils have for long taken it as a tradition to cause violence in every sport competition which is why he was calling on students to change that old mentality and ideology and to adopt new positive attitudes that will enhance national development.
He went further to state that the main reason for the Inter-Sec is for students to learn, play, make fun and enjoy. Because of this, he noted, the children should undermine the good intentions of the developers of the sport programme with violent conducts. “Once an opportunity has been provided for you the children to play with each other and relax seize that opportunity to build more friends through good conduct and behavior,” he appealed.
He however revealed that 85% of those who are causing violence during inter-secondary school sports are not school-going pupils and therefore appealed to the police to arrest anyone causing violence during and after the sport meet.
The Kids Advocacy Network President also blamed parents and the communities for the violence in school because they the pupils spend only five hours in school and the rest of the day with their parents and their communities. He called on parents to train their children so that they will not depart from good character when they grow. He also advised government to include non violence subjects in both primary and secondary schools curricula.
He said his network is partnering with the Conference of Principals and the National Youth Coalition to ensure that this year’s inter sec is peaceful.
