The Sierra Leone National Fire Force is currently engaged in a nationwide fire prevention sensitization exercise. It could be recalled that some months ago dozens of fire disasters heaped destructions on lives and property while thousands across the country were left homeless. The National Fire Prevention Officer, Ibrahim F.H Sumah told Awoko that the number of reported fire accidents within the months of May and June has reduced drastically.
Mr. Sumah explained that the ongoing sensitization exercise is targeting schools, offices and dwelling houses across the country. He added that there is an urgent need to educate and sensitize citizens about the causes of fire and preventive mechanisms to avert future fire disasters. He also stated that majority of Sierra Leoneans are not fire conscious and that is the main reason why they are now visiting the homes of people to educate and create some level of awareness in them.Ibrahim Suma intimated this press that similar sensitization exercises are ongoing in provincial areas like Kambia, Kono, Kenema, Moyamba and Bo.
The National Fire prevention Officer highlighted series of challenges they are faced with in the sensitization exercise. One of such is the lack of mobility as there are no vehicles to take the fire sensitization team to their targeted areas. He said in most cases the officers have to walk to reach those they are targeting. Another constraint he mentioned is the lack of a Public Address system to get the attention of people during sensitization.
He called on citizens and the Government to support the Fire Force to help them overcome these challenges.
