
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice Serry Kamal has officially told journalists that with the enactment of the 2008 ACC Act into law recently, the President was now ready to declare his asset alongside the start of the much awaited commission of enquiry starting to look into the operations of past government officials.
Even though he had the intention to withhold names of the commissioners who are expected to preside over the enquiry, he mistakenly mentioned one chartered surveyor and economist Mr. George as one of the commissioners.
He stated that letters of appointments have already been issued to the said commissioners for their genuine consent.
Talking on the newly enacted ACC Act , with particular reference to the aspect dealing with powers vested in him as the AG in assessing matters charged by ACC ,
he boasted that, he has overriding consideration accorded him to nullify any case preferred against anyone which is viewed as not in the public interest.
As he put it “Attorney General’s all over the world have ‘residual’ powers to operate.”
The Minister of Information and Communications I B Kargbo, specifically identified NaCSA and the SABABU education projects as some of the target institutions that are expected to be probed within the next couple of days to effect the necessary actions against culprits.
He explained, how donor agencies had committed huge funding towards the post war development of Sierra Leone but much was not realized to meet the required satisfaction of the donor benefactors.
He observed that the amount of post war development funding that was pumped into the country would have turned Sierra Leone into a better place, if properly utilized, but noted that there was no proper accounting system and that Government would want to know what went wrong with those funds.He attributed the backwardness of the country to the prevalence of corruption in the country for which he said, the government has now given the latitude of power to the ACC to arrest and charge to court anyone found wanton.He added that that a Section in the 1991 constitution which gives power to only the AG to charge or prosecute corrupt matters was amended to give ACC the force of law to operate.He explained that the controversial Daily Mail issue, with regard the payment of remunerations to retrenched staff and liquidation of that once number one media house in the country had been deliberated on at cabinet level and would be addressed soonest. This statement was buttressed by the Attorney General who stated that, everything regarding the Sierra Leone Daily Mail would be settled within the next couple of days.On the commotion which erupted on Wednesday at the opposition SLPP party head quarters in Freetown, the Ministers of Information, Presidential Affairs and Justice narrated a peaceful resolution and agreement reached between the ruling APC and SLPP party members at state house .
