Freetown City Council has in celebrating the Ramadan holiday last Sunday, treated more than two thousand children in the
Brima Attouga Stadium.
In his remarks, the Mayor of Freetown, Herbert George-Williams said the Council is committed to improve the lives of the
children socially as well as educationally.
He said the Ramadan treat is just to let the children know that the council is committed to take care of them and want all of
them to go to school, because without education the country would not develop and they themselves will not be successful in
life.
Mayor George-Williams stressed the point that the council will start giving out Grant-In-Aid to pupils of primary and JSS
schools because the council is committed to improve education in the city and beyond.
“Presently all primary and JSS schools in the city are now under the council so we have to make sure we do our utmost to
improve education and the only way we can achieve this is by helping the parents get their children to school as well as
helping the schools with financial support”, he said.
The grant in aid that would soon be dished out would be for poor and deserving students in collaboration with the schools so
that when the children receive it the schools would be in the know and they would be able to monitor the students who are not
attending school.
The Mayor said the Council is working with the Ministries of Education and Social Welfare to get the children out of the
streets and working on Bye Laws that would enhance the council’s power in implementing certain laws.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, a delegation from the Republic of Korea arrived in Freetown under the Freetown City Council to
do feasibility studies as to what they can invest on.
The delegation has been taken around the city to have first hand information and they are expected to officially have a
meeting with the management of the council where both parties would be able to make their case for the furtherance of the
city.
The delegation is from a construction company in Korea and it is the third largest in Asia.
It is expected that the council will be putting forward proposals for the City Hall and the Ultra modern market at Victoria
Park.
The Mayor who left yesterday for Kenema on an official assignment is expected in town today.
