Thousands of supporters of the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) on Tuesday 23rd October 2012 took to the streets of Kenema city and its environs to officially launch their political campaign for the district ahead of the November 17th general elections.
The supporters who were dressed in their red party colors and symbols displayed portraits of their Presidential candidate His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, the vice president and their aspirants for the councillorship and the mayoral seat for Kenema city.
Vice President Alhaji Sam Sumana waved enthusiastically to his supporters as his motorcade of over twenty vehicles and supporters processed through the main streets in the city, using Blama road, Hangha road, Koroma street, Sumaila street and Combema road.
They briefly converged at the Kenema city field along Sumaila street where party stakeholders addressed their supporters. All speakers called on their supporters to do everything possible to win the November 17 elections as President Koroma needs a second term.
The Resident Minister East William Juana Smith called on his supporters to remain peaceful at all time during the electioneering process. He described APC as a peaceful party and called on all and sundry to maintain the peace.
The APC mayoral aspirant Ahmed Sesay says Kenema is not a strong hold for any party adding the APC is more rooted in the eastern region because of its development activities in the region. With particular reference to Kenema district, he called on all to vote in APC come November 17th 2012.
The vice president of Sierra Leone Alhaji Sam Sumana says he is in Kenema to assure the people of the president’s determination for the second term. He outlined some of the achievements of the president pointing to energy, education, infrastructure and health among others. He reiterated that the president of the nation is determined to do more for his people when he comes back to power.
The vice president and his entourage continued their journey to Tongo field where he is expected to duel with his supporter. He called on his supporters to remain violence free but to ensure that they win the heart of other supporters in other party so that they will see reason and come on board for development by voting in the APC.
Meanwhile the All People’s Congress Party campaign in the district have been described by many people as peaceful as there was no indictment of violence at the time of going to press. Police presence was felt throughout the period. Talking to the Sierra Leone Police Media boss in the eastern region Prince Jaygboi Kamara confirmed that the entire process is peaceful.
