“The People of Sierra Leone voted and clearly stated their will. Through their conduct and their actions 1,984,106 men and women in this country made a commitment to peace and a violence free elections process. They voted calmly, they chose their leaders.”
These were the words of Chief Electoral Commissioner Dr Christiana Thorpe as she announced the final certified results for the 2007 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Given that the APC leads with 44.3% followed by the SLPP with 38.3% the National Returning Officer announced that “ as none of the Presidential candidates reached 55% of the total valid votes cast as per provisions of our constitution there will need to be a presidential run off two weeks from today when the announcement of the final certified results is made I therefore formerly declare Saturday the 8th of September as the date for the 2007 Presidential runoff. The run off will be between the APC and the SLPP.
The 6% difference in votes is 111,511.
Dr Thorpe also announced that campaigning starts on Saturday 25th to end on September 6th with a quiet day on Friday 7th September.
The National Returning Officer also announced and certified the 112 parliamentarians who will take their seats in the house almost immediately after the new President is sworn in.
