Residents were rudely shocked at about1:00 on Thursday the 18th June, 2009, when armed robbers, dressed in full military uniforms and carrying dangerous weapons raided Samuel Town on the highway just opposite Benguema Barracks. One striking characteristic of the armed robbers’ method of operation was their ability to engage precisely three houses at a time. Victims of the armed robbery said they were uncountable and were able to apportion themselves to the houses raided and carried on with their atrocious acts with impunity.
A victim of the robbery, Mrs. Sawyer, said the robbers were armed with cutlasses, daggers, guns and sledge hammers when they barged into her residence. Valuable items such as mobile phones, radio cassette players, and every other movable property that she could not itemize as a result of her traumatic condition were carted away. Under gun threat she was asked to produce whatever money she had and they also threatened to rape her. Another victim in a separate house, a young lady narrated the severe torture she underwent in the hands of the robbers and is now left with a swollen face because she refused to handover her belongings. This incident has left people in the town and its environs apprehensive and traumatized.
