A friend called me up recently from Kono saying ‘the main opposition party, the SLPP must still be contemplating on the factors that actually led to their down fall’ and that, even though the party may be trying to galvanize support for the next general elections, they must be going through the political trauma they encountered in 2007.
Interestingly though, I was curious to know, why he was so interested to talk on SLPP affairs than those of his party, the APC, that was unable to settle itself until few days prior to elections, that the PPRC had to intervene . Mark you; Ernest Koroma had al least three cases at different courts that were brought against him by his very APC northern brothers, among them, Edi Turay and Serry Kamal
So you can imagine, Ernest then being dragged from one court to the other to answer to charges brought against him for the party leaders. However, my friend was also right in some sense.
The factors that led to the demise of the SLPP are not far fetched. One of such has to do with the seeming leadership struggle that is at play currently within the party. They may not accept this, but that is the case. Now, look at the way the younger folks were clamoring for the party leadership, and among them was and perhaps, still, Maada Bio.
Again, the fact that Berewa was alleged coerced on the SLPP by Tejan Kabbah, and not only that, even the forceful declaration of Momodu Koroma as running mate to Berewa accounted for their defeat. It was like putting out two unmarketable items on the market stall.
To me, the lesser of two evils by then
