The APC Member of parliament for constituency 32 in the Northern part of the country is in serious conflict with Fullah cattle rearers of that area, even though the local inhabitants and councilors of Gbendembu Ngowahun Chiefdom, Bombali District are reportedly living amicably with the cattle owners.
The MP is alleged to have insisted that the cattle owners vacate the chiefdom because of their activities.
Hon. Kandeh C. Bangura of Constituency 32 in Gbendembu Ngowahun Chiefdom, Bombali district is alleged to have issued a two weeks notice to Chernoh – Abubakarr Sall, cattle owner to vacate his constituency with effect from the 21st February 2009 or else drastic action will be taken against them.
The honorable made this pronouncement on Saturday at a meeting in Kortuhun which was meant to investigate the cattle rearers with regards to their operations in the chiefdom.
Explaining how the matter was settled, Chernoh Abubakarr Sall said he had paid a rent fee to the land owners and undergone all due process. He said the councilor of that Ward was opposed to his settlement and reported the matter to the MP who later took the issue head on.
Hon, Kandeh Bangura disclosed that among the many promises he made during his campaign, was to drive away cattle in his constituency. He said the APC party will always work to satisfy his people. He said, “This is what we are working to achieve”.
The Director of Community Relations O/C Sulaiman Sesay from central police in Freetown said, “Cattle had contributed greatly to the abject poverty of the people in that part of the country and therefore the Loko crop farmers should rise and say no to the cattle in their chiefdom.”
Speaking on behalf of the landowners Alimamy Kamara said he is willing to settle Chernoh Sall in his land despite threats from APC authorities. He said “He is disabled and his only source of living is from the rentage of his land.” Kamara said, “The action which the MP has taken is a complete violation of his rights to his inherited property.”
Meanwhile the chairman of the Bombali District Council, Eric Dura Sesay said, cattle settlement is the sole responsibility of his council and he is working hard to settle the matter amicably. Our reporter also contacted Hon, Kandeh Bangura to get his on side of the story he disclosed that the decision to ask Chernoh – Abubakarr Sall out of the chiefdom is as a result of damages done to farms and other activities in the chiefdom.
He also disclosed that he acquired an illegal land that was inherited by three youths noting that he also failed to recognize chiefdom authorities during the transaction, – both local authorities and stake holders were against the dealings and manifested their frustration to him as the Member of Parliament representing them.
“I even pleaded with chiefdom authorities to give Chernoh – Abubakarr Sall at least two weeks to vacate the chiefdom, I am not against the development of my constituency but it should be done with the consent of the people” he stressed.
He however implored the chiefdom authorities not to involve in any dealings that will undermine the development of the chiefdom but to promote investments in the area concluding Hon. Kandeh Bangura appealed to the Fullah community to always work hand in hand with local authorities in the chiefdom.
