The All People’s Congress (APC) has donated relief items to some people, who had their roofs flown away by a heavy wind recently, in the town of Njagbwemafiama, Kono district in eastern Sierra Leone.
The items, worth over ten million Leones and comprised bags of rice, cartoons of nails and zincs, were delivered to the affected areas by Aiah Kontanday Briwa on behalf of their party leader, Ernest Bai Koroma.
Mr Briwa, a son of the soil and also a parliamentary representative for that constituency, told the victims that “it is the concern of the party to come to your aid exactly at the time you need help”.
He said the very day he heard of the disaster it was on that same day he reacted by getting the leader informed so that necessary mechanisms could be put in place for immediate action.
“The assistance we are making is not for the purpose of campaigning, but purely on humanitarian grounds,” he noted.
He however made it clear that if his party had been in power, they could have done more than what they did for the victims.
In his contribution, the deputy secretary general of the party in the district John Komba said, “though the disaster is an act of nature, yet human beings are sometimes contributing factors to such incidents”.
He stressed that, “all the thick forests surrounding this township are all gone,” adding that that was the worst mistake the people had done to the chiefdom by deforesting it.
“In advanced countries, one tree succeeds the other. That is to say when one tree is cut down, another tree is planted,” he said.
Mr Koroma maintained that nothing of the sort had ever happened in the township and that it never occurred to anyone to embark on tree planting in and around the township, and so that incident should serve as a warning to them.
In relation to the items presented to the affected people the APC deputy secretary general said, “it is our duty as a party to acquaint ourselves with the problems of the people. The gift is just a way of strengthening the old relationship between this party and the people of Njagbwemafiama.”
Receiving the items on behalf of the paramount chief and the people of Njagbwema, the speaker Gbodabai Fomba thanked the party for its kind gesture.
He stated that, “the only way to know a true friend is when one is in trouble and the APC party has clearly demonstrated it and the people of Njagbwema will ever remain to think of us,” he stated.
Mr Fomba assured party representatives of a comprehensive list of names of recipients of the items, which could be returned to the party secretariat immediately after the distribution
