The budget for the fiscal year 2008 will be taken to parliament today.
It is expected that the House will debate it for five days and after it would have been read by the minister of Finance David Carew.
The sum of one trillion and eighteen billion six hundred and twenty one million seven hundred thousand Leones have been granted to President Bai Koroma to be expended for the year 2008.
This government’s budget would take effect on 1st January 2008.
The total budget expenditure exceeded the Sierra Leone People’s Party’s proposed expenditure for 2008 which was contained in that government’s 2006 budget.
The SLPP’s 2008 budget was 1,118,174.5 and this is precisely short of one trillion and seventeen billion, five hundred and twenty five thousand five hundred (1,017,503,525,500) when compared to the All People’s Congress’ 2008 budget which is one trillion and eighteen billion six hundred and twenty one million seven hundred thousand Leones (1,018,621,700,000).
In the APC budget, the amount provided for salaries and wages is the total provision for the financial year 2008 for all ministries and departments, including government’s contribution as employer to the social security scheme.
The SLPP had projected 328,115.0 for wages and salaries for 2008 if they would have continued in power.
It is not clear in monetary terms whether the current budget increased wages and salaries but it is expected that with the very high figures in the resource envelopes for the various ministries and government institutions.
