The newly appointed Secretary General of the Mano River Union Ambassador Alhaji Thierno Habib Diallo a senior Guinean veteran government official who has served as Minister and Ambassador to several countries has taken up duty as administrative head of the Secretariat following the resignation of his predecessor Ambassador Abraham Boure. On Tuesday this week the outgoing Secretary General Ambassador Abraham Boure officially handed over the mantle of administrative responsibility of the MRU to Ambassador Diallo in an auspicious ceremony held at the MRU’s Secretariat in Freetown.
In his statement the outgoing Secretary General Ambassador Boure said the Secretariat has been faced with a lot of challenges since he took up office in 2008 and prominent among them is the lack of adequate financial support to boost the operation of the Secretariat. The outgoing Ambassador however said that with the little support from institutions like UNFPA he had been able to sail through the difficult times up to the point the Secretariat finds itself now.
He said there is need for institutional revitalization of the Secretariat for it to be able to carryout its mandate efficiently. He hoped that the new Secretary General can work towards achieving this.
In his address the new Secretary General said “I am arriving as the head of the MRU in a context marked by the reaffirmed willingness of Heads of State to revamp the activities of the Union in order to make it more solid and more efficient tool for the development of our respective countries” Ambassador Thierno Habib Diallo promised to revitalize the MRU as he puts it the Union is a privileged tool of economic integration of the sub region and therefore it should adapt its means, its resources to the constraints of a more and more open economy where states, while ensuring their role of public power, will create the condition for the blossoming of a strong private sector that will generate wealth for nations and job opportunities for youths. He called on the support of governments of member countries to support the Union so that together the MRU can achieve its goals. The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Samura Kamara on behalf of the government of Sierra Leone congratulated the new Secretary General Ambassador Alhaji Thierno Habib Diallo and also pledged his Ministry’s support to the operations of the MRU. The Minister promised the new Secretary General that his government will continue to meet its financial obligations to the Union and hoped that other member countries will do the same. He said as the sub region now moves towards economic integration there is need for member states to align their economic policies to create access to trade between MRU countries. Representative from the Liberian Embassy in Sierra Leone Roland N. Johnson and the Deputy Guinean Ambassador to Sierra Leone Mamadi Saiba Camara were also present at the hand over ceremony and pledged the commitment of their respective governments to the MRU.
