People living with disability in Kenema city and its environs have on Friday 12th December 2008 observed the World Disabled Day in Kenema city. The Theme for this year’s commemoration is “nothing about them without them can go through”.
The people living with disability assembled at the Forestry Industry canteen grounds and marched through Blama road to the Holy Trinity Parish hall along Blama road where they were addressed by various speakers.
In his opening remarks the chairman of the programme who is also a disabled Mr. Eco Scotland disclosed that the official day for the commemoration of the World Disable day was 3rd December 2008 but it was postponed in Kenema city to the 12th December 2008 because of logistical constraints. Mr. Scotland appealed to government and other Non Governmental Organizations in Kenema city and the country as a whole to support the disabled persons with capacity building programme for self reliance adding that disability is not an inability.
Delivering his statement the chairman Amputees Welfare Association and war wounded Mr. Solomon Cooper says before now victims were less considered in their communities some starting with their parents. He said with the good move by the disable organizations in the world in recent times this has helped to salvage the situation. He said in some communities’ disable persons are giving responsibilities to perform which he said they usually excel. Mr. Cooper thanked the government and donor organization for their support in making the occasion a reality. Short skits revealing their plight formed part of the ceremony.
