The single leg amputee sports club of Sierra Leone has praised the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the assistant rendered the team which enable them to take part in the just concluded amputee World Cup in Turkey.
This was disclosed to Awoko Sports by the Public Relations Office, Albert Mustapha, who said few days to the competition UNDP came to their rescue by donating $US21, 000 to the team to make the trip.
He also mentioned that the remaining money was paid by the Federation for International Football Association (FIFA).
Albert disclosed further that Sierra Leone and France were the first countries that entered Turkey for the competition, and that they were placed in the same group with Brazil and Russia who had been in amputee football for 25 years. He said they were unable to win any match in the competition as luck was not on their side.
The single leg amputee PRO said during the competition they learnt more about amputee football which involved weight and shooting, adding that because they lacked these skills that was why they lost most of their matches.
He noted that, “the essence of the amputee World Cup is to have confidence to promote peace building. When you see amputee playing football, they are demonstrating that peace is in Sierra Leone”.
Early next year the team will be taking part in the second edition of the Amputee Nations Cup to be hosted by Liberia. The first edition was won by Ghana in Freetown early this year.
