The Sierra Leone Chapter of Amnesty International has launched their maternal mortality rate campaign at the city field along Sumaila Street in Kenema city.
The National Director of Amnesty International Brima Sheriff said in the past the organisation was only advocating for civil and political rights in the country and has now upgraded its activities and political rights campaigning for socio economic and cultural right campaigners to suit a tropical country like Sierra Leone.
He stated that the present human rights survey conducted in the country has revealed that about 62% of women in Sierra Leone stand the risk of dying during pregnancy or when delivering a child. ‘The position of Amnesty International Sierra Leone he went on is critical because they will be engaging government relating to the high national mortality rate in the country to ensure that women live in dignity during pregnancy and at child birth’ Sheriff said. The National Director said the present campaign Amnesty International Sierra Leone is engaging in is to bring the plight of ordinary Sierra Leonean women to the attention of the International community in order to attract donor funding without criticizing the government.
Mr. Sheriff hinted that the present maternal mortality campaign the Institution is engaged in is a six years project in which more sensitization activities targeting the grassroots communities aim at reducing the menace of maternal mortality could be undertaken throughout the country.
