There is a saying nothing lasts forever or all good things must come to an end.
Well the dominance of the United States in the Olympics has finally come to an end in this year’s Olympics in Beijing as they have been toppled by the host China into second place by the number of Gold medals won.
Since the 1984 Los Angeles Games when America dominated the Olympics, no country has been able to halt their superiority until now.
Last year when the Chinese were putting together everything in place, one of their main aims was to challenge America for the top spot. Indeed their preparation of their athletes have paid good dividends as they dominated the diving, weightlifting, table tennis, Badminton and for the very first time won gold in Boxing.
The opening up policy of China in 1987 has really brought success to the communist country that has made tremendous progress in their economy, infrastructure and now the Olympics.
Presently the International Olympics Committee has published figures to show that the Beijing Games is the most widely televised with 4.4 billion viewers and has the best Olympic village ever. In some quarters, some IOC officials and athletes are now saying the Beijing games is the greatest ever games staged as everything constituting a good game was excellent. Even the pollution in the city was hardly seen.
Infact, the chairman of the London 2012 Olympics Lord Sebastian Coe who was in Beijing was very pleased with the achievement and made it clear that London would find it difficult to match the Beijing Games.
People around the world are looking at China as the next super power for its economic strides. Presently, China has overtaken the US as having the largest market in the world. Also they have the fourth largest economy in the world and South East Asian countries have started planning to use the RMB (Chinese currency) as their market money because of the instability of the dollar.
The RMB is very strong in the world as it is getting stronger every day against the Dollar, Euro and British Pound.
The Olympics has come and gone, but the impression left behind would be very good for the country as they never went through western type civilization. The games have left a new legacy for Chinese how to enjoy sports and how to open up to foreigners.
Also the world has learnt a lot about China and that the country is not what the media has been telling them as thousands of fans have gone home with optimism that China is a force to reckon with economically and infrastructurally.
Winning 51 gold medals makes China the second most country to reach such a mark and the breakthrough in some other disciplines like Fencing, Boxing, and Archery etc. helped the country to reach such heights.
However, the former East German and Soviet Union model that China has been operating on by dominating field events and weightlifting are now in transition by winning medals in Beach Volleyball, Field Hockey and Women’s Gymnastics.
38 foreign coaches were hired in different disciplines to improve sports and more women won gold than men. However, IOC has asked that the Chinese women’s Gymnastics team should be investigated after so many complaints that these young girls were not 16 years old.
Presently, the Chinese sports council have now said they want to be competitive in the track events for the next Olympics.
