Sierra Leone: Chinese Ambassador Hu Zhangliang on Thursday gave out 142 scholarships to university students and pupils from different Secondary and Primary Schools, at a ceremony in the Economic Counselor’s Office, OAU Village.
“It’s my big pleasure to have you here attending the Award Ceremony of the 2021 Chinese Ambassador Scholarship and Grant. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy and in my own name, I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education for sparing time to grace today’s event.”
He said this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Sierra Leone diplomatic relations, and over the past 50 years the two countries have been proven by time and facts to be genuine friends and reliable partners.
Amb. Hu averred that the Chinese government attaches great importance to supporting the Free Quality Education initiated by President Julius Maada Bio. Last year, he said China transferred 2 million RMB yuan as direct financial support to the Free Quality Education program, provided eighty sets of desktop computers to some local schools through the Office of the First Lady and the Office of the Vice President, and delivered 6,923 tons of rice aid, a large part of which was used for the school feeding program with the cooperation of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and WFP.
“China will continue to work hand in hand with Sierra Leone to promote mutual beneficial cooperation and common development. I wish that all of you will actively join in this endeavor. I wish you great achievements in your career.”
Minister of Basic Education Moinina Sengeh commended the Ambassador for his good will because the government is already giving scholarships to every pupil attending government and government assisted schools, and they still need other organizations and people to help these pupils with support for other school materials.
He said since the Free Quality Education was established there have been more enrolment of girls and they now have over 2 million pupils in school.
“I want to thank you for everything you have been doing as this is not the first time you are giving the Ambassador Scholarship support. It is on that the government appreciate very much and the President attaches great importance to the school feeding that you have supported. We are very pleased for what you have been doing for the education sector and all other sectors in the country.”
He advised the students and pupils to make sure that they put more effort in their education as it is the only way to the top for them to succeed.
The deputy Minister of Higher Education Sarjoh Aziz Kamara thanked the Ambassador and said currently there are 125 university students registered in China and more are already on their way this September to study there.
This he said is because of the friendship between the two countries and he hopes that China will continue to support Sierra Leone and wish them all the best as he said the people and government of Sierra Leone are with them during this time of challenges as Henan Province is facing serious flooding.
One of the recipients Christian Sartie said he was very happy to have received such support as he was struggling to pay his fees. He said with the support from the Chinese Embassy he will now pay his fees and will also be able to get other educational materials.
The Ambassador spent about two hundred and seventy million Leones (Le270,000,000) this year on the Ambassador Scholarship, with 22 university students receiving $1000 each and the 125 pupils receiving Le2 million each.
