Pupils of the Milton Margai School for the blind along Wilkinson Road, Freetown are in a dilemma as they face poor administration and allegations that female students are being sexually abused and are calling for government’s intervention. The Acting Principal Albert Sandy described the allegations as baseless and they were only meant to tarnish his image that he had built throughout the years. Some of the students are however even calling on government for the immediate removal of Mr. Sandy. They also alleged that the school has been going down the drain during his regime.
Some students who prefer anonymity also stated that since Mr. Sandy took up office all has not been well in the school as blind female student are being impregnated at will. They cited a case of a girl (name withheld by this Press) who was allegedly impregnated by another blind pupil (also name withheld) attending the Collegiate Methodist School.
The students are not happy at the way the school’s administration solved the matter. The girl was expelled from the school and sent to her parents in the provinces while the boy regarded as the Principal’s blue eyed boy was taken to the residence of the Chairman of the school’s board and is still receiving support from the school. This they claim was not the part of the rules of the school as both the students were supposed to be expelled. They further alleged that those students who openly expressed their views against the Principals decision were also expelled.
In terms of poor administration they stated that during the second week in December last year some blind students who are attending secondary schools and those in tertiary institutions staged a peaceful protest but they were manhandle by police from the Congo Cross Division on the orders of the Principal.
Speaking about the food they said it is far below standard “the food just resembles the food that they prepare for the soldiers in training in the past. No meat and sometimes no fish. We are really living in a situation where our world is falling apart.”
The Acting principal further told Awoko that since he took up office in 2006 he had initiated certain activities like CTA, distribution of educational materials to pupils that will be going to secondary schools adding that the educational standard has improved since he took over from his successor.
On the issue of female girls being impregnated in the hostels by their male counterparts, Mr. Sandy said this is not true and in the event of such a thing happening in the school compound, both of the boy and girl will be expelled
