All is now set for the 70 miles Eastern Regional Cycling Competition that is slated for tomorrow Saturday May 29 from Kenema to Kono which is sponsored by Lion Stone Sierra Leone, a Diamond Mining Company.
Speaking to Awoko yesterday, the President of the Association Winston D C Crowther said that the competition has been divided into stages with the first stage from Kenema to Tongo which is 27 and half miles and the winner in that stage will receive Two hundred fifty thousand Leone’s and the second position will receive two hundred thousand Leones.
According to Winston Crowther, the second stage is from Tongo to Koidu in Kono which is 47 and half miles and the winner of this stage will receive the same amount as the first stage.
According to Crowther, the overall winners after the 70 miles race will receive a million Leones and the runner up will receive seven hundred and fifty thousand Leones.
Crowther also mentioned that the first 12 cyclists in the competition will receive medals and the winners in each stage are accepted to receive trophy.
He also mentioned that 13 to 20th position will also recive consolidation prize of forty thousand Leones each.
According to Crowther the prizes for the competition is six million Leones including the medals, trophies and the cash prizes instead of the previous five million Leones which was for prizes.
He also mentioned that the Liberia National Cycling captain and D’Lion an Olympian will also participate in the competition to give the competition some international flavor. He also stated that they are expecting two cyclists each from Kenema and Kono to participate in the competition.
He further stated that this competition will also serve as trial for the Commonwealth Games slated for India from October 3-14 this year and for this reason he has appealed to the cyclists that anyone who is caught cheating will be disqualify and will also pay a fine.
When asked why they decided to go as far as Kono, Crowther said over the past years they have organized competition in the Northern and Southern Regions and this time they have decided to come to the Eastern Region going as far as Kono as Kono is part of Sierra Leone.
And the other reason for that, their sponsors has office in these places so they need to pass through those offices so that people in those areas will know that they are sponsors
The Cycling delegation is expected to depart this morning for Kenema to prepare for the competition tomorrow.
