The Eastern Region Branch of Amnesty International Sierra Leone (AISL) in Kenema City has elected its new Executive to mann the affairs of the organisation in the Eastern region. The election took place recently during a regional meeting held at the Government Secondary School Hall in Kenema City. Giving background information before the election Mohamed Kamara of AISL said the organisation started in Sierra Leone in 1982 in the Port Loko District, Northern Province. He said in 1990, Sierra Leone gained AI status adding that the membership of AISL and that of the Non General Assembly (NGA) members meet every 2 years.
The outgoing Chairman of AISL, Kenema Branch, Edward Kai highlighted some of their achievements in the region. He lavished praises on the Human Rights Coalition groups in the Region, more especially the District Human Rights Committee (DHRC) for what he described as a job well done in the region.
The Chairman of the Kenema meeting Richard T.M. Bayo stressed on the importance of the meeting held at this time of the season. He encouraged members to pay their monthly dues which according to him, qualifies one to vote or to be voted for in the NGA. Presenting a White Paper on Gender Concepts, the Amnesty International Women’s group leader in the Eastern region Madam Baindu Samba commended the effort of the people of Jormu Kaifebu and Dia Kagbado communities in the Kenema District. Madam Samba called on all in the region to emulate their good examples by undertaking Agricultural activities within their communities that can consolidate their capacity building. Patricia Garber was elected as Regional Chairperson of AISL, Kenema Branch while Hassan Bawoh was elected Vice Chairman. The position of the Regional Secretary went to Mohamed Sannoh, Madam Doris Kallon was elected Women’s Group Leader. The post of Treasurer and the Public Relations Officer (PRO) one and two went to Lamin Kamara, Isaac Baion Hindoveh Public Relations Officer (PRO) one and Mohamed Mansaray Kenema based Reporter for Premier Newspaper became the PRO two. The position of Campaign and Growth Coordinator went to Edward Kai and the post of International Council Member (ICM) went to Mahmoud T. Kamara. Madam Baindu Samba, Sylvester Sidie Kallon and Elkana Magao were nominated for Council membership to be approved by the National General Assembly (NGA) that is to take place in Kenema City.
