The Minister of Energy and Power Haja Afsatu Kabba yesterday lit up Congo Market in Brookfields in Freetown. The market which was built in 1995 was without electricity for the past years.
Addressing a mammoth crowd at the market, the Minister said that, the APC motto which is Action, Progress and Commitment is what President Koroma, her ministry and the Freetown City Council (FCC) is working to achieve.
She said that, the FCC, the Ministry of Energy and Power are working to implement President Koroma’s dreams to the people of Sierra Leone.
The Minister maintained that where there is electricity there is peace and development, adding that lighting of the market is one of the many things her Ministry is currently doing to ensure all the 29 markets have electricity and good water supply.
Haja Afsatu Kabba admonished the youths and the market people to make use of the facilities provided for them and ensure that they take care of it. She called on the youth to be vigilant in the community and to ensure that the property are not misused.
The Energy and Power Minister also donated 10 bags of cement and some cash to the market women to pave the tables where they dry their fish.
She also underscored the importance of the role the women and youth played during the last Parliamentary and Presidential elections and urged them to do more in the upcoming local council elections.
In his speech, the acting Mayor of FCC Herbert George Williams said that, the reason why the country was last in the human index and termed as the poorest and that Freetown was one of the darkest and filthiest city was because of bad leadership.
With the leadership of Ernest Koroma the city has now become the cleanest and brightest city he said.
He told them that the only way the market will have attention is to vote for him and Dennis Smith as Mayor and Councilor respectively.
Mr. Williams said that to every privilege there is responsibility, adding that the people should change their attitude and be a watch dog in the market.
The Acting Mayor called on the people to vote APC for more development, progress and changes in the country and informed them that if he wins the elections he will build a market for them to sell in and not in the streets.
The General Manager of the National Power Authority (NPA) Dr Zubairu Kaloko said that two months ago, just to show how this government operates, the Acting Mayor came to the Ministry and requested that electricity be provided in all the 29 markets in the city.
He explained that Congo Market happens to be the first market to have running water and electricity.
Dr Kaloko noted that part of the vision of NPA is to provide adequate, effective and affordably electricity supply for the people of this country.
One of market the women Yealie Conteh thanked the Minister and Acting Mayor for their work and assured them that they will take good care of it.
The NPA General Manager disclosed that with the joy the people show it gives him more hope to work and fight for the people and described the event as a fulfilling day in his life.
Months ago the Minister and the General Manager of Guma Valley Water Company and Dennis Smith commissioned water taps and toilet facilities at the market.
