ADVOCAD, an organisation supporting access to justice and strengthening rights for girls and women, over the weekend, launched a resource centre and library.
The Interim Executive Director of ADVOCAID Simitie Lavaly, gave a background of the organisation, which she said, has been supporting women by providing legal advice and education to literate women through the facilitation of classes.
She said the goal of the organisation which was founded in 2006 is to educate women and their children in conflict with the law, foster an increased ability for women to understand and claim rights and to empower them as active citizens.
The resource centre and Library which was a support from the British High Commission and ‘Mama Cash’ the Executive Director said will allow women to empower themselves in other areas of the law, as lack of knowledge of the law and their rights get them into trouble with the police.
Simitie disclosed that they have been providing weekly classes for women in prison and through these classes; these women have been able to improve their literacy, thereby improving their sense of independence, as well as opportunities for employment.
A representative of the British High Commission, Rebecca Gibbons in her statement, said the UK government is a leading support of women’s rights around the world. “Women’s rights and human rights remain at the heart of British foreign policy.”
She said the British High Commission has been supporting ADVOCAID as they have produced guidance and professional assistance for women facing legal difficulties in the country.
Gibbons maintained that women’s development is very important for the country, as they should receive equal access to justice and those in danger of coming into conflict with the law are provided with the best possible advice and assistance.
While launching the centre and Library, Gibbons said this shows that ADVOCAID is a group of dedicated individuals working actively to improve the living standards of women in the country and which should be applauded by all.
