The Project Officer of a local NGO, Action Plus Sierra Leone Peter Kaitibi has explained to stakeholders in Kenema City about the activities the organization is implementing in the Kenema District.
He maintained that with funds from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Cordaid Netherlands they are implementing programmes on teenage pregnancy, sexual and gender based violence, and prevention campaigns in their targeted communities. He added that they are also operating on gender, livelihood support programmes, Human Rights and women’s empowerment in five Chiefdoms within Kenema District.
The Project Officer also informed his audience that the organization through the Government hospital in Kenema have established a centre at the hospital to address Sexual and Gender Based Violence (GBV) issues.
He disclosed that Action Plus is providing transport refunds and drugs for clients that are visiting the centre for medical attention including the provision of a Consultant Doctor without payment of consultation fee.
The Project Officer lauded the effort of the Family Support Unit at the Kenema Police division for charging Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (UCK) perpetrators in the Kenema District to court to face the consequences of their actions.
Kaitibi disclosed that Action Plus has attended to a total of about 251 cases, 23 of which were unlawful carnal knowledge and the youngest of which is a five months old girl since the start of their operations in Kenema District up to December 2010.
