Three people including the production assistants for For Di People (FDP) newspaper – Michael, Independent Observer’s Lamin and a newspaper vendor named Mustapha were yesterday morning seriously injured when a local mini bus (Poda-poda) lost its brakes and hit them as they were busy arranging newspapers for their daily sales.
Madina Kargbo, a newspaper vendor who witnessed the accident explained that while they were collating newspapers outside the post office in the morning they saw a ‘poda poda’ coming down from the top end of Gloucester street in high speed.
He stated that the way the Poda-poda crossed Siaka Stevens street it was obvious that its brakes had failed. The poda-poda then careened into the crowd of newspaper operatives and hit Lamin who was standing on the side of the road.
He continued, “Michael who was with Lamin saw it coming, and almost instinctively he tried to escape but it was too late, as the bus caught him off guard and practically snatched him pulling him along and while dragging him under the bus carrier, Mustapha (vendor) who was also by the side of the road was hit as the van continued its deadly journey down the street.”
Mount Everest Security, Jah who was at the scene said, “The bus crossed Lightfoot Boston Street with Michael under the carrier and finally came to a halt almost at the side walks opposite the First International Bank.”
Another vendor stated that they had to lift the bus to remove Michael underneath the carrier.
