Inorder to minimize the improper use of government property, the anti corruption in collaboration with other government institutions have published a document outlining the guides on the best use of government property.
In his key note address, the chairman Dr Alfred Kandeh said it will be better for every meaningful Sierra Leonean to wisely use government property. He said most of the property acquired by the state for government departments is for the furtherance of government work and that no reasonable person should be seen destroying such facilities.
The chairman said the use and the total misuse of state property over the years, has raised an alarm to both government and the donor agencies. He said government medicine, food and other supplies meant for the benefit of institutions, have all been sold to private sector. Dr. Conteh also cited the destruction of the National Stadium of which he said was a complete misuse and abuse of government property.
Speaking on behalf of the anti corruption, the director of systems Neneh Dabor said the people of this country need to ask themselves who is government and what is government property. The director said Sierra Leoneans are the government and therefore need to take care of state property. She said in the past laws have been put in place in order to address the misuse of state owned property and put it under control, but it failed. “But this time section 48 of the anti –corruption acts gives us the mandate to act appropriately” she said.
The Chairman National Assets Alhaji Alim Sesay says his mandate as chairman is to properly monitor all state property and to take the necessary actions whenever the need arise. He however called on officials to treat state property as their own.
Thus presentations were made with regard to the proper guides on the use of state vehicles. M. A. Swarray the logistic manager of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority dilated on the need to carefully use state vehicles, take proper care of it and the penalties that will be inflicted if misused, while the Executive Director from insight technologies touched on the use of office equipment, internet facility, and thus consciously advised officials to judiciously use them well.
Mohamed Nallo of the Ministry of Works, Housing and Infrastructure explained the measures in the allocation of quarters to staff, observation of detail in the inventory and the penalties that could be meted out to defaulters when found wanting.
