A picture of a non Speaker of Parliament is hung among the pictures of past Speakers of the House of Parliament.
The said picture is that of Hon Victoria Saidu representing Wellington, Freetown Urban. The MP is a first comer to Parliament representing the ruling All Peoples Congress Party. She is also among the MPs representing the Sierra Leone Parliament to the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja and she is the 4th ECOWAS Deputy Speaker, replacing Hon Elizabeth Lavalie of SLPP.
Her picture is hung in the lounge of Parliament building among former speakers; Percy Davies, S.M.F Kutubu and Edmund Cowan. All served eminently as Speakers of the House of Parliament and are recognized by their pictures hung.
No other picture, not even that of the serving deputy speaker, Hon Chukuma Johnson or the former, Hon Elizabeth Lavalie is hung among the pictures of past speakers.
Some Staff members’ spoken to about the hung picture declined to be quoted but sources at Parliament state that the picture of the MP was not supposed to be hung among those of the former speakers. The source also indicated that not even pictures of deputy speakers of the Sierra Leone Parliament are hung in the lounge let alone that of an MP. An undisclosed senior staff Member of Parliament commented that the right place for Hon Victoria Saidu’s picture to be hung is at the ECOWAS parliament where she is serving as deputy speaker and not among the former speakers in Sierra Leone where she is serving as an MP.
This reporter made moves to contact the clerk of parliament to know the reason why the picture of an MP is hung among the former speakers but as usual, “he is busy with some people and cannot see you”.
