A six man wrestler’s team will depart the shores of Freetown today to represent the country in the 7th edition of Africa Wrestling tournament slated for 26 to 28 March 2009.
The team is made up of 4 wrestlers a coach and one official. The wrestlers are Abdul Rogers (66 Kg), Augustine C Kamara (76 kg) Captain Mohamed A B Barrie (84kg) and Lahai Marah (96Kg). They will be accompanied by Prince Suallay president of the association as leader of the delegation and coach Sidike Kamara.
Speaking to Awoko Sports before leaving the wrestlers president Suallay said they are going to engage other Commonwealth countries in the tournament.
He also mentioned that they are looking forward to winning the competition as this is their second international outing that they are going to compete in and not to simply participate as the Wrestlers have been training intensively for the competition.
Prince also revealed that after the training from the two international experts the sports gained momentum and their first competition in Togo was an eye opener for them as that was their first outing in the international arena.
The captain of the team Mohamed A B Barrie said that they have learned a lot of skills during the training last year which they are going to put into practice during this competition that would yield positive result.
He also mentioned that in their first international competition in Togo he was asked to fight traditional wrestling which he was not exposed to. This he said affected him a lot – but this time around he now knows how to fight traditional wrestling which is an advantage to him and the team.
He also assured Sierra Leoneans that this time around they would perform better in the competition as out of the four wrestlers that would be making the trip two of them have been exposed to international competition as they were part of the team to Togo.
