52 Schools to participate in 2012 Inter-Sec athletics meet

Fifty-two Secondary Schools in the Western Area are expected to participate in this year’s Western Area inter-Secondary Schools track and field athletics meet slated for 6th to 8th March 2012 at the National Stadium in Freetown.
This disclosure was made to the press by Sahid M. Conteh, Assistant Director of Physical Health Education in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Mr. Conteh revealed that an estimated nineteen events have been lined up for the three-day sports meet with the Minister of Education, Science and Technology deemed to be the distinguished patron.
The Assistant Physical Health Director said the Ministry has already held successful planning meetings with Principals and Teachers of Physical Health Education of various schools where issues such as security was discussed. This, he said was predicated on a letter from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in which he raised serious concern about the incidences of violence in previous secondary schools’ sports meets. The IGP’s letter had also warned the Stadium Management to ensure that they secure a police permit prior to the date for the start of the sports meet in order that the police can provide adequate security.
Mr. Sahid disclosed that it was agreed that Senior Secondary Schools will only compete senior categories while the Junior Secondary Schools partake in the junior category and that no repeaters would be allowed to participate in the games.
Mr. Sahid however called on schools authorities to ensure verification of their students and to send in their entry forms for the competition latest 29th February instant and must be signed and stamped by the schools’ Principals.
