The Chief Fire Officer of the National Fire Force Naziru Kamanda Bongay yesterday said that for the past three weeks, they have tackled around 45 to 50 fire incidents around the country.
Speaking in an interview with Awoko, he said that this is a huge amount for a small country like Sierra Leone, as it is happening all around the country and the regions.
Some of the cause, he said were caused by naked lights while sighting the recent fire incident at Circular Road and the one at Kissy Road was caused by electrical fluctuation.
He said that the wiring of the house was faulty and it had been done for over a long period of time and the insulation of the cables had worn out.
In some other places, he said, the fires were caused by stored fuel, he concluded.
The Chief Fire Officer said that people are not careful in using fuel in their residences and places of work respectively.
He said the cause of the fires varies and diverse as the case may be.
Despite the huge amount of fire incidents, they have been able to do their own bit as fire fighters, although some cases were fatal, sighting the fire incident at Kissy Road which claimed the life of an old woman. Chief Bongay said that his firemen are responding to the fires even though they do not have all the fire-fighting kits but are risking their own lives to save others, therefore they must be appreciated by all. He also praised the government for being very supportive.
The Chief Fire Officer also admonished all to be very careful as fire destroys lives and property.
