The Fifth infantry Battalion inter company Six Aside Football Competition has ended at the hockey pitch at Wilberforce barracks with Bravo Company emerging as the winner for the three days competition.
The competition was witness by senior military officer including the Chief of Defence Staff Major General A. C. Nelson –Williams
The Minister of Defence Rt Major A.P. Conteh presented the winning trophy to the winners and all the participating teams received certificates.
Col Sankoh who was Guest of Honour in his closing statement said he was moved by the kind of friendship and fair play that was demonstrated during the competition as FIFA always look up to fair play as one of their main objective if the game of football is to develop.
Speaking to Awoko sports the sports officer Lt E, K. John said that they organized the competition to identify the players that will represent the Fifth Battalion in the forthcoming RSLAF inter Battalion six aside competition that has been slated for July 28at the hockey pitch, Wilberforce.
Lt E. K. John went further that even though it was raining, but with the kind of talent, they were able to achieve their objective by rebranding the institution.
He also revealed that they want to promote friendship in sports that’s why they decided to have the Freetown City Council Football team to engage with the Military team to build the civil and military relationship which is very good for the institution and the country as a whole.
Lt Col Harleston also stated that most of the players that will be representing the Fifth Infantry Battalion are not going to play just to win the RSLAF inter Battalion trophy but also to help the RSLAF football team to gain Premier League status in the next Sierra Leone Football Association Premier League season.
