The alleged case of kidnap involving the newly elected SLPP Councilor of Ward 369, Mohamed Kanu Mansaray and others reported at the Masiaka Police Post, North of Sierra Leone, is currently under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Head of Police Media, Assistant Superintendent Ibrahim Samura has confirmed that five people are in custody as police investigate the matter. He said he did not make further comments.
However, the alleged case of kidnap has sparked a furor of controversy with a wave of political dimension being given to the matter in spite of police investigation.
SLPP Secretary General, Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie said due diligence should be given to the matter in respect of the facts and merits of the case as it is, not as people want it to be. “Such dimensional framing of a matter has the tendency of jeopardizing the delivery of justice,” he cautioned. According to him, there are two sides of the matter which are due to be handled with fairness.
He explained that Councilor-elect Kanu-Mansaray and his friends were on their way to the provinces when they ran out of fuel. He said, a certain young man approached them and offered to sell fuel to them. He said the Councilor and his friends were negotiating with the gentleman when four other young men joined them and according to him, there was an attempt by the young men to rob them and in the interim, a serious scuffle ensued. He said the Councilor and his guys were able to get hold of one of while the other ran into the bushes. The unlucky one was then taken to the Masiaka Police Station where on arrival he alleged he had been kidnapped.
However, both case files have been submitted to the CID by the LUC of the Masiaka Police Station for judicial investigation. Both suspects are helping the CID with the process.
Mohamed Kanu-Mansaray is SLPP Councilor-elect of a bye-election held in Ward 369 about the mid of January which he won against candidates of the ruling APC, and oppositions, PMDC, NDA and UDM political parties.
