Unlike previous years when Sierra Leonean pilgrims to Mecca were frustrated as fingers of accusation were either pointed at the agents or organizers for the delay or eventual failure of the trip, the current one under the APC government has been described as the best in recent history.
Vice president Sam Sumana and some government officials were not only at the Freetown International Airport to bid them a safe journey to the holy land, but the minister of Social Welfare Hadja Musu Kandeh and the chairman of the Hajj Committee, Alhaji Yayah Deen Kamara, spent five nights at the airport to ensure that the returning pilgrims were awarded a rousing welcome.
In the words of the president of the Supreme Islamic Council of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Umaru Sillah Bah, “everything went on as planned, when Rozal Air Boeing 747 aircraft touched down at the airport with the second and final batch of 463, with the exception of one Ibrahim Keita who sustained injuries during an encounter with the airport security personnel, at least there were two fire vehicles on the sides of the aircraft ready to be used in case of any fire eventuality”.
The local commander of the Lungi Police Unit, Supretendent Henry Sesay, and that of the Airport Division Alfred Karrow Kamara, teamed up with the Sierra Leone Airport Authority ensuring that bagages were not tampered with.
The minister of Social Affairs on behalf of government thanked the Hajj Committee for such an impressive and successful organization.
