A German national, Elmont Joseph and a Nigerian, Israel Ede were yesterday arraigned before magistrate Steven Conteh of court No. 1 on 5 count charges which include conspiracy to defraud contrary to law, obtaining money by false pretences contrary to section 32 (1) (1) of the CPA 1916 as amended.
The accused persons allegedly said they had 50 kilograms of co-platinum for sale, causing money to be paid by false pretences contrary to 32(1) of the larceny act 1916.
The 1st accused Israel Ede made his first appearance on the charges in court on the 23rd March 2009 and was granted bail. The second accused Elmont Joseph was arrested yesterday at the court precincts and was brought before the court.
Vandi S Nabbi defending the second accused applied for bail but Pious Sesay associating with the prosecution objected to bail to be granted to the second accused on the grounds that issue of 419ers is demoralizing the progress of Sierra Leoneans and that bail should not be considered at this stage.
Vandi S Nabbi argued that the accused are 2 in number and the 1st was granted bail adding that as they were jointly charged he sees no reason why the second accused should not also be granted bail.
The presiding Magistrate Conteh remanded both the second accused and the surety of the 1st accused on his statement that the 1st accused is absent in court.
