Four pupils from various secondary schools who sat to the 2008/2009 West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination WASSCE have emerged as best performers with the best overall results in the country.
They are; Osman Bah and Anrite Columbus Thompson, both of the Sierra Leone Grammar School, Joseph Vandy Sengbeh of the Bo Government Secondary School and Hannah Sam of the Annie Walsh Memorial School.
Also the Sierra Leone Grammar School topped the list of schools with … students who got credits in eleven subjects followed by Government Secondary School Bo with three students with credits in nine subjects, while Annie Walsh and Beacon High School had two students with credits in nine subjects.
However, the Prince of Wales, Hermann Gmeiner Lumley, Educaid, Richard Allen, Modern High, Baoma Secondary and Yengema Secondary had one candidate each with credits in nine subjects.
With regards to the performance at credit level in five subjects and above, the Sierra Leone Grammar School also took the lead. Out of 120 candidates who took the exam, 57 had credits in five subjects and above.
In subsequent scores, St.Josephs’ Freetown sent 364 candidates out of which 84 candidates had credits in five subjects and above. The Ahmadiyya, Freetown, sent a total of 908 candidates only 77 had credits in five subjects and above. Whilst the Annie Walsh School submitted a total number of 336 students with 56 pupils scoring credits in five subjects and above. The results of 66 candidates have been withheld for examination malpractice. However the overall performance of students shows some improvement. English language had an improvement of 18.62 percent while mathematics needs to improve.
The examination had a candidate entry of 29, 244 in which 29,122 sat to the examination. The candidates in this year’s examination showed a 22.12 percent jump over the 2008 figure of 23,946.
