The Women Situation Room (WSR) which is set up to promote peaceful and non-violence elections is deploying a total of 350 national and international elections observers across the country.
Reading a statement from the women, Ambassadoor Alari Cole said that the WSR was set up to to increase the active participation of women and youth in the democratic and elctoral process.
She said these observers who are mostly young women, have gone through a one-day training.
Given a purpose of the Room, Ambassador Cole stated that it is not intended as a punctual intervention but aimed at achieving a long-lasting effect. It is a political process that is aimed at mobilising, “harnessing and employing the expertise and experiences of women in taking action to prevent or mitigate potential conflict that could emerge before, during and after elections.”
She said the WSR will create a space for women to be involved in peace advocacy, mediation, coordination, political analysis, observation and documentation, as they will engage in consultation with all electoral stakeholders.
Given an update of the activities that WSR has been engaging in over the past months, the National Consultant Babara Bangura said they have been conducting training for 700 youths from all over the country and this will enable them understand their rights and how to access it.
Also, she said 20 media practitioner were also trained on responsible reporting, 140 women were trained on Pressure Groups, who represent the WSR in the 12 districts.
Also they had organised a meeting with the different political parties especially SLPP and APC, where they made a pledge for a peaceful elections.
