The National Electoral Commission yesterday declared 131 ward winners of the Local Council Election at the SLBS in Freetown. Out of 5,901 polling stations the tally center has processed the results for only 3,816 stations which represents 64.7% of polling stations.
The NEC Commissioner Christiana Thorpe said that they have inputted in to the system 689,655 and 648,335 votes were recorded valid while 41,320 were invalid votes with an average national turnout of 38.8%.
Since the last declaration of winners for (44) forty four wards on July 10, another (87) eighty seven winners were declared yesterday giving the total of (131) One hundred and thirty one wards haven been declared as winners for the 2008 Local Council Election.
She however disclosed that ward results are only announced when all the polling stations results in all centers for a particular ward have been entered, but also noted that results for all wards are being processed and considerable progress is being made by the commission.
The One Hundred and Thirty One (131) declared winners were mainly from Western Rural Council, Freetown City Council, Pujehun District Council, Moyamba District Council, Bonthe District Council, Tonkolili District Council, Port Loko District Council, Koinadugu District Council, Kono District Council, Kenema District Council and Kailahun District Council.
Earlier yesterday, at the British Council Auditorium in Freetown the Western Area Commissioner of NEC Hannah Kawaley announced some preliminary results from the Western Region for (15) fifteen wards
According to the NEC Commissioner, they will officially declare another set of winners on Monday July 21 this year, and much progress should have been made at the tally center on all polling stations across the country.
