SIERRA LEONE, Freetown – Chef de mission Unisa Deen Kargbo has disclosed that 32 athletes will represent Sierra Leone in Birmingham in this year’s Commonwealth games slated for 28th July – 8th August 2022.
They are drawn from Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Judo, Swimming, Wrestling and Para Sports which include Para-Athletics, Para-Lifting, Para-Tennis.
He also revealed that the Commonwealth Games Association of Sierra Leone in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority recently met with the athletes and officials that will represent the country in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The engagement was to disclose the team and admonish the delegates to remain focus.
He said the key messages were; athletes should not disappear during and after the games. Delegates should be well behaved. All female athletes will be tested for pregnancy.
He stated that all athletes in weight events, eg, Wrestling, Boxing, Judo will be monitored to ensure they maintain their registered weights.
The Chef de mission said that two Flagbearers / Captains were announced based on their experience and profile in Sports. For the female was Hafsatu Kamara in USA who has represented Sierra Leone in Athletics in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Rio 2018 Olympic Games.
For the male was Joshua J J Wyse who has a record of representing Sierra Leone in FIN world Championship and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Departure for Birmingham is expected on 23rd July 2022. BT/20/7/2022
